geez this stuff is good.........I have played them for everyone that comes through the studio and everyone asks the same question; why haven't I heard of them? I have yet to read the book Mr. Fry
gave me, but I cannot fathom why this stuff is unknown to most people I know. I have played 'i'm in love with a girl' about 100 times in the last 3 days
Big Star is my second fave band ever...right after The Beatles.
It's hard to find a better recorded record. The acoustic guitar sound has never been matched IMHO.
I think a lot about what Chris Bell would be doing these days if not for the fatal car wreck.
"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."
Hunter S. Thompson LOVES me some Big Star! #1 Record, while a bit sparkly on the high end for my tastes, is still one of my all time faves. While Alex is a genius and all, I really think Chris was the heart of the band. Such a tragedy. "I Am The Cosmos" never leaves my CD player for long. You're right, the acoustic sound was phenomenal, especially on "Watch the Sunrise".a friend of mine who now lives in Memphis TOTALLY nails Watch The Sunrise on the deck at Central BBQ...it's NOT a easy tune to play ...ignore the talking and the table slapping...it only lasts a few seconds...but Brandon McGovern is a pure pop genius....his cd's are really good.
listening to "Like Flies on Sherbet" -- seems like Chilton understood the impact of closed loop historical revisionism memphis (and the broader record/rock music industry)
was drowning itself in at least as early as what was it, 1979? or perhaps quaaludes were still prevalent,
hung out with Brandon and Greg a few times when Greg was a DJ at Rock 103. We have a standing argument with Roberson about a t-shirt he used to wear with the sleeves cut off - he says it was the Clash, I say it was some metal band
